Review of "Seeking Good Debate: Religion, Science, and Conflict in American Public Life" by Michael S. Evans

Abstract

As the perception of conflict between religion and science continues to thrive in the public sphere, scholars continue to wrestle—in the face of historical and philosophic arguments that such a conflict does not exist—with the social endurance of this seemingly age-old debate. In Seeking Good Debate: Religion, Science, and Conflict in American Public Life, Michael S. Evans challenges his readers in a new direction, to move away from analyzing the institutions of religion and science as a way of understanding the conflict. Instead, his analysis centers on the public debates themselves. In doing so, Evans moves the whole conversation about religion and science from one about conflict to one about what constitutes good debate in American society.
